Chad is the home to 200 ethnic groups and over 120 languages and dialects.
Chad is divided into three distinct zones, the Savanna in the south, the Sahara Desert in the north, and the Sahelian belt in the center.
Exploration in Chad began in the 1950's. Discoveries by Conoco and Esso in the 80's and 90s did not lead to major developments until the 1070 export pipeline was built from the Esso led (at the time) Kome oilfield development through Cameroon to the coast. This pipeline allowed Chad to export oil for the first time in 2007 and led to oil becoming the major source of export income for the country ever since.
Chad oil production comes from the central African rift system. While most of hte production comes from the southern Doba and Doseo basins. The Lake Chad basin is known to be highly prospective, but the more remote nature of that area has led to limited development of the discoveries in the area to date.
Despite active drilling since the mid 1950's Chad is one of the most underexplored countries in Africa.
